Chancellorsville is a historic site and unincorporated community in Spotsylvania County, Virginia approximately ten miles west of Fredericksburg. The town's name comes from the inn operated by George Chancellor's family at the intersection of the Orange Turnpike and Orange Plank Roads in the mid-19th century. The Battle of Chancellorsville was fought there during the American Civil War in May 1863 and the Battle of the Desert was fought nearby in May 1864. During the 1863 battle, Lieutenant General Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson was wounded by fire from a friend and died eight days later, on May 10, 1863, of pneumonia. Portions of the Chancellorsville and Wilderness battlefields are protected within Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Parks, although both battlefields have been threatened by development in recent years. The site of the Chancellorsville Inn where Union General Joseph Hooker had his headquarters during the 1863 battle survives in the National Military Park, as does the site where Jackson was wounded. Jackson's place of death is at Guinea Station in Caroline County, south of Fredericksburg, and also survives as part of the park. * Wilderness Church at Chancellorsville was the center of a position taken up by Union General Schurz's division during Stonewall Jackson's surprise flanking attack. * Ruins of Chancellor House, headquarters of Federal General Joseph Hooker of the Army of the Potomac during the battle and then burned in May 1863 *Semi-stereo detail of Lieutenant George Chancellor Co E 9th Virginia Cavalry on the Wilderness battlefield, standing next to some Confederate breastplates near Palmer's Field on the Orange Turnpike - George Oscar Brown, 1866
