Cohasset is an unincorporated community in Fluvanna County, Virginia located approximately two miles west of Fork Union on State Route 6 (River Road). It became a community thanks to the Virginia Air Line railroad, with the station known as the Fork Union Depot. The station served the Cohasset community itself, which grew up around the depot soon after it was built: a general store and post office, four houses, a very old gas station, all still standing. Mrs. Lettie Dickey, who sold the station site to the railroad with her husband, named the community of Cohasset after her Massachusetts hometown. The train ran from Strathmore Yard on the James River to Cohasset, Carysbrook, Palmyra, Troy and Gordonsville or Charlottesville. The railroad was completed and operational in October 1908. This branch line was built to carry goods that would otherwise be too tall or too wide to pass through the tunnels that criss-crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains between Charlottesville and Waynesboro. Coal for Washington, DC and Northern Virginia was carried on the James River Line to the southern intersection of the turnpike at Strathmore Yard near Bremo Bluff. The shipments then traveled on Virginia Air Line to Lindsay's North Junction and on to Gordonsville. The Fork Union Depot served as a typical small train station for its day. Much of the local business was associated with the nearby sawmill, cannery and two small oil storage operations. The passengers came from nearby farms, small towns, and Fork Union Military Academy. For many years, the train was the primary mode of transportation for cadets attending nearby Fork Union Military Academy. The railroad also became a major thoroughfare connecting smaller communities along the route with larger cities such as Washington, DC, Association. C&O took over the company entirely in July 1909 and acquired it in July 1912. In 1927, passenger-only service was reduced to one train a day in each direction and was replaced by mixed trains (passenger and freight) in June 1932. Mixed trains they stopped operating in 1954. By the 1930s, the proliferation of automobiles, trucks, and airplanes had taken over the railroads. On October 26, 1971, the Fluvanna board unsuccessfully sued the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad to keep the railroad running. It was abandoned in November 1975. Several buildings associated with commerce during the railroad era still survive in Cohasset.
