Croaker is an unincorporated community in James City County, Virginia, USA on the south bank of the York River 10 miles downstream from West Point. The York River originates from the confluence of the Mattaponi River and the Pamunkey River at West Point. The York River flows into the Chesapeake Bay about 30 miles below Croaker. The name 'croaker' is thought to derive from the abundance of croaker (Micropogonias undulatus), a coastal bottom-dwelling fish found in the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the York River. The town of Croaker was known early in its history as Taskinas Plantation, then as Hollywood (because of the abundance of holly trees). 'Taskinask' was designated by the Tobacco Inspection Act 1730 as a public tobacconist's shop on the site where local growers stored their crop for shipment to England. Croaker had several businesses, two schools, a church and several homes in the early 20th century. Some of the retailers who opened branches before 1950 were members of the Garrett family. Garrett's Grocery opened in 1909 and was operated by five generations of the family until it closed December 31, 2013. Croaker General Store acquired the building and opened May 25, 2015. In February 2006, the historic Norge Station (approx. 1908) of the Chesapeake Peninsula and Ohio Railroad Extension (C&O) relocated approximately 1 mile to a site adjacent to James City County. Williamsburg Regional Library branch (opened 1996) on Croaker Road. The following month, work began on laying the new foundations for the building. Opened in 1980, York River State Park is located in Croaker. Within the state park, Historic Croaker Landing has been an archaeological site on the National Register of Historic Places since 1987. While much of Croaker is now within York River State Park, the remaining area is divided into residential , agricultural and forestry. Interstate 64 runs through the outskirts of the community and can be accessed via exit 231, signed for Croaker-Norge. The former Richmond-Williamsburg Stage Road, now US Route 60, is also nearby. There's also a farm displaying busts of everything from previous presidents to George W. Bush. However, they are in a fair state of disrepair. These busts are from a former tourist attraction called Presidents Park which went bankrupt in 2010.
