Deatonville is a rural unincorporated community in western Amelia County, Virginia, United States. It is located off SR 616 (S. Genito Road) at its intersection with the eastern terminus of SR 617 (E. Sayler's Creek Road). Deatonville is located on the border of ZIP Codes 23083 (Jetersville) and 23966 (Rice). The community was formerly called Thompson's Tavern. A post office originally spelled as Deatonsville was established in 1813, one of the first in Amelia County; it remained in service until the beginning of the 20th century. Sandy Creek Baptist Church on Route 617 claims to be the oldest Baptist church in Amelia County, having been founded in 1771. The original building survived the Civil War but burned down in 1908. The current building was dedicated and expanded in 1910. By. Deatonville stands on the route taken by Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army in their westward retreat in the waning days of the Civil War before surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Many historic street signs line the road, including one in Deatonville which reads: On this day [June 6]. April] the entire Confederate line would march west on the Rice-Deatonville Highway toward Farmville. Union forces constantly harassed Lee's rear, engaging in brief skirmishes at every turn. Built around 1850, Wootton House, near Deatonville, is an I-shaped house with Gothic Revival features. The property and associated buildings are being investigated for possible listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Farmer House, several miles south of Deatonville, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
