Deltaville is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place in far eastern Middlesex County in eastern Virginia in the United States. It is known as a vacation spot for those seeking boating, fishing, and other water-related activities. The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution on October 2, 2012 supporting efforts to officially name it 'Deltaville, the Boating Capital of the Chesapeake Bay'. Approximately 500-800 full-time residents call Deltaville home; In the summer months, however, the city reaches several thousand inhabitants. Deltaville is also home to many retirees. The Census Bureau defines Deltaville as a Census Designated Place (CDP) with a population of 1,119 in 2010. The city has developed around a large area of shipyards, primarily for commercial boaters on the bay. Those days are long gone, however, and today the area is home to many marinas, shipyards, and shipping-related businesses. Originally known as Sandy Bottom, in 1909 the community decided to change the town's name. The name Delta was suggested for the city's shape, as it is bounded by the Rappahannock River to the north, the Piankatan River to the south, and the Chesapeake Bay to the east. There was already a Delta, Virginia, so 'City' was added at the end. Deltaville's zip code is 23043. For more than half a century, Deltaville has been home to a semi-professional baseball team, the Deltas. The 1948 Deltaville Ballpark is their playground. Other city businesses include a municipal swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball court and playground, and a community center, all built and maintained by a volunteer board of Deltaville Community Association, a (501)(c).)( 3). The Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point State Park, home to the historic nationally registered buyer vessel F.D. Crockett, are located in Deltaville at 287 Jackson Creek Road. This water park spans 36 acres and spans the waters of Mill Creek and Jackson Creek Road. It forms the backdrop to the museum, multi-use performance pavilion, outdoor exhibits, and waterfront performance area. Waterfall. Established in 2002, the mission of the museum and park is to preserve and exhibit the history of the Chesapeake Bay boatmen, their working boats, their fishing and their methods. The museum and park host farmers' markets, plays, concerts, and festive events throughout the year. Deltaville Point is Stingray Point, named for Captain John Smith on July 17, 1608. Captain John Smith's general history reads, 'He was stung by a stingray while scouting the bay.' Captain Smith reportedly ordered his men to dig a grave. Thinking the sting would kill him, Walter Russell, a physician and member of Smith's crew, applied 'precious oil' to Smith's wound. The captain recovered enough to eat the skate for dinner that night. The legend that the local Native Americans who lived around what is now Antipoison Creek gave Smith a cure has largely been debunked. On the night of April 16, 2011, the community was hit by a devastating tornado. Before reaching Deltaville, the storm had spread from North Carolina to the Chesapeake Bay. With wind gusts estimated at 135 miles per hour, it took just minutes to cause approximately $6.8 million in damage. The tornado touched down near Porpoise Cove on the south side of Deltaville and moved northeast, destroying 32 homes, as well as Zoar Baptist Church and the community pool, and severely damaging the meetinghouse. Despite their injuries, no one died. FD Crockett was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.
