Earls is an unincorporated rural community in Amelia County, Virginia, United States. Earls is off SR 153 at the southern terminus of SR 641 (Earls Road), one mile north of the Amelia-Nottoway county line. In the early 20th century, Earls was a post town with its own post office. The area is now served by the Post Office at Amelia Court House, the county seat, 13 miles (21 km) to the northwest. The closest fire station is Amelia County Volunteer Fire Station 2 in Mannboro, 5 miles (8 km) to the northeast. The Earls neighborhood appears to have been spared major events during most of the Civil War. Troops on both sides would come through in the waning days of the war in early April 1865, as Confederate forces retreated west and Union forces gave chase. However, most of the movement around Earls appears to have taken place during a brief lull in the fighting between the Battle of Namozine Church and a series of engagements in western Amelia County. General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant on April 9 at Appomattox. Manassas Hill School, built between 1917 and 1920, was one of the first of several Rosenwald schools in Amelia County. It was designed for a teacher and is located on what is now SR 615 (Namozine Road) near Earls. In the early 20th century, the Rosenwald School Project was a community initiative that established thousands of institutions throughout the South, primarily to educate African-American children. The Manassas Hill School property went up for sale in the 1960s after desegregation. Manassa (also spelled 'Manaza') Hill Baptist, a historic African American church, is located 2 miles north of Earls on Route 615.
