Grove is an unincorporated community in southeast James City County in the Virginia Peninsula subregion of the United States. It is centrally located in Colonial Virginia's historic triangle of communities, connected by Colonial Parkway. This region is one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world. The Grove is located approximately seven miles east of Williamsburg on US Route 60. The Grove borders the James River and is separated from the Newport News city limits near Lee Hall by Skiffe's Creek. Historic sites in the Grove associated with Virginia's colonial past include the Wolstenholme Towne Archaeological Site, the administrative center of Martin's Hundred. It was rediscovered in 1976 on the site of Carter's Grove Plantation built in 1755. The plantation was privately owned in 1960. Owned and operated by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, it was open to the public from the 1970s until 2003. In In 2007 the property was sold to private individuals. The Grove's contemporary development began with the African American settlement of freedmen of Carter's Grove and other plantations after the American Civil War. Until after the early 20th century the population was less than 100 people. During both World Wars, the Grove's population increased rapidly. This was in part due to the attraction of hundreds of displaced people, mostly African Americans, who were uprooted by federal land acquisitions for large coastal military installations in nearby James City and York counties. Naval bases established included Yorktown Naval Weapons Base, Cheatham Annex Supply Complex, and Camp Peary. In early 2008, many new homes were built in the Grove. Along the southeast edge, available sites and levees in the James River and Skiffe Creek are designated for industrial use. These were attractive to new and advanced business developers.
