Jamestown Colony in the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. It was located on the northeast bank of the James (Powhatan) River about 2.5 miles (4 km) southwest of the center of present-day Williamsburg. It was founded on May 4, 1607 by the Virginia Company of London as James Fort. (14 May 1607 N.S.) and after a brief abandonment in 1610 it was considered definitive. Several unsuccessful attempts followed, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke, founded in 1585 on Roanoke Island, later part of North Carolina. Jamestown served as the colonial capital from 1616 to 1699. Despite the shipment of more colonists and supplies, including the arrival of eight Polish and German settlers and the first two European women in 1608, more than 80 percent of the colonists died between 1609 and 1610. mainly due to hunger and disease. In the mid-1610s, the survivors left Jamestown, but returned after encountering a supply convoy on the James River. In August 1619, the first recorded slaves from Africa to British North America arrived on a Dutch-flagged British privateer at what is now Old Point Comfort, near the settlement of Jamestown. The approximately 20 Africans in present-day Angola had been kidnapped by the British crew of the Portuguese slave ship So Joo Bautista. They most likely worked as slaves in tobacco fields under a race-based system of indentured servitude. Among them was Angela, who was bought by William Peirce. The modern concept of slavery in the colonial United States was formalized in the 1640s (heard by John Punch) and fully entrenched in Virginia in the 1660s. The London Company's Second Colony of Bermuda claims to be the site of the oldest city in the English New World. , like St. George's, Bermuda, was officially incorporated as New London in 1612, while James Fort in Virginia did not become James Towne until 1619 and has not survived to this day. In 1676, Jamestown was intentionally burned down during Bacon's Rebellion, though it was quickly rebuilt. In 1699, the colonial capital was moved to present-day Williamsburg, Virginia; Jamestown has ceased to exist as a settlement and is now just an archaeological site, the rediscovery of Jamestown. Today, Jamestown is one of three places that make up Virginia's Colonial Historic Triangle, along with Williamsburg and Yorktown, with two major cultural landmarks. Historic Jamestowne is the archaeological site on Jamestown Island and is a collaborative effort of the Jamestown National Historic Site (part of Colonial National Historic Park) and Preservation Virginia. Jamestown Settlement, a living history interpretation site, is operated by the Jamestown Yorktown Foundation, a government agency of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In May 2022, BBC News reported that Jamestown was under threat from climate change.
