Jetersville is a mostly rural unincorporated community in southwest Amelia County, Virginia just off US 360 (Patrick Henry Highway). The downtown area is located at the intersection of SR 671 (Jetersville Road, a short loop section of former US 360) and SR 640 (Perkinson Road). Norfolk Southern Railway operates along the main lines. Jetersville, which may have originally been Perkinsonville, is named after John 'Black Jack' Jeter in local tradition. Other sources state that it is named after John's father, Rodophil Jeter (after whom the Rodophil community is also named). Apparently the Jeters were originally French Huguenots fleeing persecution, eventually arriving in America in the early 18th century. Rodophil Jeter was a state legislator and a prominent figure on the Amelia County Board in the early 1800s, and several of his family members established businesses in the area. The town post office, one of the first in Amelia County, has been called 'Jetersville' since about 1827. Jetersville is near the route taken by Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army in their retreat in the closing days of the Civil War. , before surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Lee's army's last major battle took place on April 6 a few miles west at Sayler's Creek on the border between Amelia and Prince Edward counties . Many historic street signs line the highway, including one on former US 360 that reads: Jetersville: April 5, 1865: Lee met Union cavalry and infantry in their line of retreat at this Richmond and Danville railroad station. Rather than attack the entrenched Federals, he decided to change course and begin a night march to Farmville, where rations awaited the Army. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Schlegel (or Schlegal) and Keystone mica mines near Jetersville were among several veins that became profitable operations in Amelia County, although they quickly sold out. The Jetersville and Amelia area contains some of the largest deposits of mica and feldspar in Virginia. Located in a small tornado lane in central Virginia, Amelia County has experienced numerous tornado touchdowns. Notable tornadoes include the April 30, 1924 tornado that passed east of the courthouse and moved from Jetersville to Chula, killing one person and injuring seven others. Jetersville School, built about 1923 or 1924, was one of several Rosenwald schools in Amelia County. The Jetersville plan called for a 10-acre campus with a building that could house two teachers. In the early 20th century, the Rosenwald School Project was a community initiative that established thousands of institutions throughout the South, primarily to educate African-American children. In the 1960s, after desegregation, a property on US 360 called Jetersville School was put up for sale. Jetersville remained a small but thriving railroad station well into the 20th century. However, the railroad now only carries freight trains, and the older part of the city centered around the old station fell into disrepair as the depot closed and development moved northwest toward the four-lane US 360 Bypass. The city still has its own fire station (Amelia County Volunteer Fire Department Co. 3) and its own post office (ZIP Code 23083) serving most of western Amelia County.
