Lambsburg is an unincorporated community in Carroll County, Virginia, USA Lambsburg is located 10 miles east-southeast of Galax. Lambsburg has a post office with the ZIP code 24351. Lambsburg is located in southern Carroll County near the North Carolina state line in a watershed above Stewart's Creek, between Fisher's Peak to the west and Sugar Loaf Mountain thereto. Over the years, a mountain known as Sugar Loaf or Pan di Zucchero has risen above and behind the community. Like other mountains of the same name in the world, its name may derive from the shape of the peak, which resembles a 'sugar loaf' (Allaby, 2010). The name 'sugar loaf' was coined by the Portuguese in the 16th century, when the sugar cane trade in Brazil was at its peak. According to historian Vieira Fazenda, blocks of sugar were placed in conical clay molds and shaped into bread to be transported on ships. The Lambsburg Virginia community has been around for a few hundred years. This is where Hardin Taliaferro, pronounced 'Tolliver,' grew up on the Little Fish River in the 1820s, just across the state line in Surry County, North Carolina. Lambsburg was then called 'The Hawks Settlement', then Rocksburg, and then Lambsburg again. The community of Lambsburg was named after JC Hugh Lamb, who moved here from Guilford County, North Carolina in 1860 and purchased approximately 500 acres of land on Stewart's Creek. His wife Mariam A Lamb was the first female postmaster for the post office established there in 1866. The post office was in the house. The area was very sparsely populated. Mt Airy, NC was a small community and Galax, VA didn't exist until 50 years later. Mail was carried on horseback from Mt. Airy to Lambsburg and from Lambsburg to Old Town, just west of where Galax now stands. Mr. Lamb was a very progressive man. He is said to have built the first schoolhouse in Lambsburg and to have employed Fannie Kingsbury as a teacher in the one room log house at his own expense. He is also credited with building the first church, with services led by the Rev. Eli Whittington, a Methodist minister from Guilford County, North Carolina. Stewart's Creek was named after the Stuart families who settled there or received advance land grants along the creek: including John Stewart (1787), father-in-law of Abraham Hawks; Charles Stuart (1810) married Lucy Collins, sister of Chap Collins, and Archibald Stuart (1883), father of General Jeb Stuart. Fisher's Peak is said to have been named after a member of Jefferson and Frye's survey team when they traced the border between North Carolina and Virginia. Hot and exhausted after climbing the mountain, Fisher is said to have drunk too much cold water from a spring at the top and died there. This source is located at the headwaters of the Little Fish River, which flows south about four miles west of Lambsburg. The Flower (Flour) Gap Trail, which runs through Lambsburg, is the oldest north-south trail in Carroll County. Flour and grain from mills on the Yadkin River in North Carolina were transported by railroad car to the mining districts of Austinville (Carroll County), where they were exchanged for pig iron and lead. This road was later abandoned in favor of Piper's Gap Road, named after the road's surveyor. Lambsburg experienced its first golden age in the second half of the 19th century. An 1885 map of Carroll County from the USGS survey shows that the Lambsburg/Aaron section was the most populous area in the county, excluding Hillsville. Located midway between the two closest train stations, Roanoke and Winston Salem, it has grown into a major commercial center, with five major trading companies run by Daniel Carlan (general merchandise), Orvil Hawks (shoes), and Friel Hawks ( pet food and groceries). ).he turned. Osborne Hawks (specializing in preserves) and Billy Hawks (wholesale and retail of whisky, fruit and vegetables). John C. Lamb ran an arms factory. Groug Kingsbury had a carpentry shop which made coffins and household furniture. Three state distilleries were operated by Billy Hawks, Friel Hawks and Daniel Carlan. The whiskey was transported to train stations and shipped to other states. Osborne Hawks operated a large cannery and shipped or mailed its produce to other communities or towns. A camp run by Levi Blackburn, with a blacksmith shop that repaired wagons and removed wagon wheels, catered to people who came from afar in wagon trains to shop in Lambsburg. An academy for men and women was built on land donated by Friel Hawks in 1893. Cable Hawks was the principal. Professor JA Thompson, Professor Brown and Minnie Hawks Boyles were the teachers. Mrs. Boyles taught the girls in a separate room. There were plans to build a railroad from Roanoke to Winston Salem where it would connect with the Yadkin Valley Railroad. In 1890, the N&W Railway Company had surveyed and acquired a right-of-way through Carroll County that included a Lambsburg depot, 34.5-acre freight yard and rest area near the NC/VA state line. There is still a building erected by the N&W on the site, now used as a residential building. Troubled times came and the railroad was never completed. He stopped at Anderson Bottoms and the railroad company mapped out a town they called 'Bonapart'. The first shipment out of town was a shipment of Galax sheets from the Woodruff Company of Low Gap. As a result, they changed the name to Galax and the company was incorporated in 1906. Galax's head of tracking negatively impacted Lambsburg's business. Railroad cars no longer rushed to shop there and business suffered as a result. In 1910, Lambsburg's Academy for Men and Women burned down, and the community's education system suffered. In 1918, the Eighteenth Amendment took effect and the sale of alcohol was made illegal. Billy Hawks, owner of the only remaining state distillery, went out of business and another thriving business went bankrupt. The hands of Providence had dealt Lambsburg hard. It was no longer a thriving economic and educational center. The spinning wheel of history had now passed. In the 1960s and early 1970s, the community of Lambsburg was traversed by an Eisenhower Interstate System highway designated I-77. The real estate for the Interstate segment at Exit 1 was purchased by the family of Marcus Fayette Edwards (b. 1897-m. 1971) and Nancy Payne Edwards (b. 1899-m. 1963), who owned several hundred acres of land at the time Marcus had purchased the land in the late 1920s after working in West Virginia coal mines for a while before moving to the community of Lambsburg, a place he knew before. Maybe he was born there. There has been no development in the region for large commercial ventures for many years. Different small businesses operated at different times. In recent years, Love's Travel Stop & Country Store opened in 2012 and Dollar General Store in January 2019.
