Laurel Fork is an unincorporated community in Carroll County, Virginia. It is near US Route 58 and 12.4 miles (20.0 km) east-southeast of Hillsville, Virginia. Laurel Fork has a post office with the postcode 24352. Before the town was known as Laurel Fork, it was called Bolt Town, after Dr. Bolt and the many members of his family who originally lived in the town. Back then, Bolt Town consisted of Sam Bolt's store, a post office, and a few farms, and was nicknamed 'Little Cincinnati' due to the seemingly superior attitude of its residents. Eventually, the community got its name from the Laurel Fork creek that meanders through the nearby foothills, which in turn is named after the native rhododendron. Early English settlers, who didn't know the rhododendron's name, called it 'laurel,' after the shrubs they knew from England. Late 19th century censuses show that 60% of Laurel Fork's population was literate. Laurel Fork Boys' and Girls' Academy was built between 1903 and 1904, and later became a high school. Businesses were also established, including a printing house, a short-lived automobile company, the Laurel Fork Bank, the Midway Hotel and Restaurant, the Laurel Fork Mercantile, Puckett's Grocery and Garage, and the Laurel Fork Telephone Company. Laurel Fork would have the first airport in the county. Surviving historic landmarks in Laurel Fork include Laurel Fork Early Baptist Church, founded in 1846. This makes it the oldest church on Laurel Fork and one of the oldest in Carroll County. The church was a branch of New Hope Primitive Baptist. The church and a school next door burned down and then rebuilt in 1876 on land donated by Mr and Mrs Reuben Nester. In 1970 the church was bricked over and now stands on Laurel Fork Road. Adjacent to the church is the former Point Pleasant School. Built in 1911, this one-room school is believed to be descended from the first school on Laurel Fork, which burned down earlier. Point Pleasant School closed in 1948. In September 2007, the school was listed on the Virginia Register of Historic Landmarks. In October 2007, Point Pleasant School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
