Lightfoot (formerly Kelton) is an unincorporated community on the line of the City of James and York County, west of Williamsburg, Virginia. Originally known as Six-Mile Ordinary, Lightfoot is located six miles west of the Colonial Capital on Richmond Road (US Route 60), which, along with Centerville and Longhill roads, predates the Revolutionary War. Six-Mile Ordinary was on the old stagecoach route for New Kent County and Richmond. (A common tavern was a Colonial-era tavern that provided food and lodging for travelers and their horses.) Traditionally nearby is the land of War Hill (or, as it was known, Warhill), named for a battle in the U.S. revolutionaries. war. taking place there on June 26, 1781 between British troops under Lord Cornwallis and Allied forces under the Marquis de Lafayette. Nearly 150 men were killed or wounded in the battle that took place during the campaign that led to the victory at Yorktown and established the independence of Virginia and the United States. In 1881, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad was built in the area and a local railroad station called Kelton was established in what is now the Lightfoot area. The source of the station name is unclear. When a post office was established in 1882, the first postmaster suggested the name Philip Lightfoot, who before 1748 had been a well-known lawyer and merchant. However, he may also have been named after Lightfoot Taylor, who ran a stage there. in 1880. In modern times, Lightfoot is probably best known as the site of the great Williamsburg pottery factory. At one point, at the entrance to the Lightfoot community, there was a sign that read 'Welcome to Lightfoot, the home of the Williamsburg Pottery Factory.' Lightfoot also has a number of discount and specialty shops, hotels, motels and restaurants, including the family-friendly Great Wolf Lodge Resort and a popular small amusement park called . In 2006, Sentara Health System opened the new Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center on Mooretown Road. Nearby are Interstate 64, US Route 60, and State Route 199, a semi-circular highway around Williamsburg with its western terminus at Lightfoot. Bruton High School, opened in 1976, is located near Great Wolf Lodge. In the late 20th century, the 238-acre Warhill property was one of the largest undeveloped properties in the region. In 1996 it was acquired for public use. Located on Centerville Road near the intersection of U.S. Route 60 and State Route 199 were designated as mixed-use properties in the James City County Master Plan. In 1999, the Warhill Sports Complex opened next to the new high school site. In 2005, construction began on the new Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools Warhill High School, which opened in the fall of 2007.
