Lodore is a rural unincorporated community in northern Amelia County, south of the Appomattox River in the US state of Virginia. It is off SR 616 (S. Genito Road) at the intersection with the northern terminus of SR 636 (N. Lodore Road). The community was listed as a post town called Houston before the name was changed to Lodore around 1845. However, on Civil War-era maps, 'Lodore' was only used to refer to the home of one of the landowners along Genito Road. An intersection a little less than a mile away has been named Giles Crossroads or Giles Chapel, after William Branch Giles, United States Senator and Governor of Virginia, whose home is not far to the northeast. The Lodore Post Office operated until at least the early 20th century; The area is now served by the post office several miles south of the county seat, Amelia Court House, ZIP code 23002. The surrounding area around Lodore appears to have been spared from major events during most of the Civil War, even though there was much fighting a few miles to the south and west during the last days of the war in early April 1865, as General Robert E. Lee and his army led the retreat west. A Confederate train from Richmond, forced to bypass the Lodore area because the Genito Bridge over the Appomattox River was impassable, was destroyed by Union forces near Paineville. Several structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places are located near Lodore, including: * The Wigwam, historic home of William Branch Giles, 24th Governor of Virginia, approximately 4 miles NE. * Haw Branch Plantation House, approximately 2 miles S. as the crow flies. * Grub Hill Church, about 4 miles southeast. * Egglestington Plantation House, approximately 4 miles southeast.
