Mount Clifton is a census-designated place in Shenandoah County, Virginia, United States. As of the 2020 decennial census, the village had a population of 110, of whom 6 were Native American or Alaska Native, 1 Asian, 0 Black or African American, 7 Hispanic or Latino, 0 Hawaiian and Pacific Islander, 4 a few other races, 8 of two or more races, and 91 white. It has also been reported that there are 54 units, of which 3 have been declared empty. Mount Clifton probably gets its name from its commanding position overlooking Mill Creek. It was founded by George Hammon and his children in the mid-19th century. They built and operated a shop, mill, sawmill and smithy in the area. Shortly after the Hammon's arrival, the Howard's Lick Turnpike opened, the main road connecting Mount Jackson to Orkney Springs and West Virginia. A customs house was built on Mt. Clifton and the community became a stop for many visitors from the resort towns of Orkney Springs or West Virginia. As in other small communities in the region, commercial, social, educational and spiritual institutions arose. These include: * Mount Clifton Methodist Church, built in 1884. * The Mt. Clifton Store, built around 1900. * Mt. Clifton School, the first of which opened in 1852. * Mt. Clifton Odd-Fellows, established in the early 19th century. * The Mt. Clifton Mill, which began operation in 1813. * The Mt Clifton Post Office, opened in 1850 and located in the local shop. Today the commercial interests of the community are long gone. The Mt Clifton Post Office closed in 1900. The mill and school closed in the mid 1940s. The last shop closed a few decades later. Only the church remains in use and most of the buildings that once surrounded it are abandoned or demolished.
