Newport News (/njuprt-, -prt-/) is an independent city in the US state of Virginia. At the 2020 census, the population was 186,247. Located in the Hampton Roads area, it is the fifth largest city in Virginia and the 140th most populous city in the United States. Newport News is part of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area. It is located at the southeastern tip of the Virginia Peninsula on the north bank of the James River, which flows southeast from Skiffe's Creek over several miles of footbridge to the river's mouth at Newport News Point in the Port of Hampton Roads. The area now known as Newport News was once part of County Warwick. Warwick County was one of the eight original counties of Virginia and was established in 1634 by order of King Charles I of the House of Burgesses in the British colony of Virginia. Fifteen years of rapid development began in 1881 under the leadership of Collis P. Huntington. whose new peninsular extension of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad from Richmond opened transit along the peninsula and provided a new route for the railroad to transport bituminous coal from West Virginia to the port for coastal shipping and worldwide export. With the new railroad came a terminal and coal docks where coal miners were loaded. Within a few years, Huntington and his partners also built a large shipyard. In 1896, the newly incorporated town of Newport News, which had briefly replaced Denbigh as the county seat of Warwick County, had a population of 9,000. In 1958, Newport News was consolidated by mutual consent by referendum with the former County of Warwick (which was itself a separate city from 1952 to 1958), merging the two localities at approximately their pre-1896 geographic size. is Newport News Chosen because it was at the time the third largest independent city in Virginia by population. With many residents employed at the massive Newport News Shipbuilding Facility, the joint US Army-Air Force installation at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and other military and contractor bases, the city's economy is closely tied to the military. The location in the harbor and along the James River favors a large shipping industry which can benefit from the miles of coastline. Newport News also serves as a rail-sea hub, as the Newport News Marine Terminals are located on the eastern edge of the city. It is served by the major east-west interstate Interstate 64 and is connected to other cities in Hampton Roads by the Hampton Roads bypass, which crosses the harbor via two bridge tunnels. A portion of Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport is located within the city limits.
