Princess Anne is a community in the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, United States, at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and North Landing Road near the West Neck River. The parish, which dates back to 1691, is named after Princess Anne of Denmark and Norway (later Anne, Queen of Great Britain, 1665-1714). The community is home to the Virginia Beach Civic Center, which houses most of the city's offices, including City Hall. Traffic is a major problem in the region, as the Civic Center is a major employment center and is only accessible via dual carriageways. In 1691 the county of Lower Norfolk was split roughly in half. The western half became Norfolk County, while the eastern half became Princess Anne Shire, later known as Princess Anne's County. Between 1691 and the merger of Virginia Beach and Princess Anne County in 1963, this community served as the county seat and was sometimes known as the Princess Anne Courthouse. The old courthouse dates from the 17th century. Despite its name, Princess Anne High School is not located in the Princess Anne neighborhood of Virginia Beach. However, Princess Anne Elementary School and Princess Anne Middle School are located in Princess Anne, not far from the Civic Centre. General area subdivisions include: Ashby's Bridge, Asheville Park, Castleton, Christopher Farms, Courthouse Estates, The Estates at Munden Farms, Heritage Park, Highgate Crossing, Highgate Greens, Holland Oaks, Holland Woods, Hunt Club Forest, Indian River Plantation , Lago Mar, Lake Placid, Mayberry, Pine Ridge, Prince George Estates, Princess Anne Woods, Red Mill Farms, Rollingwood, Sherwood Lakes, Strawbridge, Three Oaks, and others. The area has an exceptional crime rate and provides access to some of the best schools in the Virginia Beach City public school system, including Kellam. Due to its location near Pungo, the Virginia Beach Boardwalk and the coastal community of Sandbridge, the area is in high demand with new residents. Like much of the southeastern United States, the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach has a subtropical climate characterized by short, relatively mild winters and long, hot, humid summers. Largely due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its location south of the Chesapeake Bay, temperatures are more moderate than inland, winters are warmer, and snowfall averages only 3 to 4 inches per year. Each year, Princess Anne residents can expect more than 50 inches of rain. Here flourishes a great variety of plants that are found throughout the area, such as camellias, oleanders, azaleas and gardenias. Trees include sabal and windmill palms, holm oaks, myrtles, as well as various magnolias, cherry blossoms and figs. Loblolly pine, bald cypress, wax myrtle, sweet gum, and many other native plants are also common. Several areas of Princess Anne, such as the Courthouse and Lago Mar, are well established and have flowering plants throughout the year.
