Providence Forge is an unincorporated community in New Kent County, Virginia, United States. It was an early settlement in the county (itself founded in 1654) and the site of a colonial ironworks destroyed by British General Banastre Tarleton during the American Revolutionary War. Nearby, the Chickahominy River separates New Kent from Charles City County. US Route 60 and State Route 155 pass through Providence Forge. Colonial Downs Racetrack is nearby, just off the Providence Forge exit of Interstate 64. In 1881, when the new Peninsula Railroad subdivision was built, a Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) station was located in Providence Forge, primarily to facilitate the transportation of bituminous coal from West Virginia to the new town of Newport News. There, at the port of Hampton Roads, coal docks were built to load workers with coal for export around the world. The expansion of the C&O peninsula was good news for the farmers and traders of the Virginia peninsula, and they generally welcomed the railroad. According to the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society, Providence Forge was a stopover for passengers until about 1931 and for freight until at least the late 1960s. The building was demolished in 2006. The only similar structure at Lee Hall has survived and in 2008 efforts were made to move it up a notch and open it as a museum. Cedar Grove, Emmaus Baptist Church, Olivet Presbyterian Church, and Spring Hill are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
