Pungo is a rural community in the southern part of the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and was one of the original seven counties when Virginia Beach City was incorporated in 1963. The area's name comes from a local Native American tribe, the Machipungo, a branch of the Chesapeake tribe. It is named after a local Indian chief, Machiopungo. Because the parish is in an independent city, there is no single census for the neighborhood that was originally part of Princess Anne County until the entire county became part of Virginia Beach in 1963. Like much of Southern Virginia Beach, the area is surrounded by farmland. Pungo is known for its Pungo Strawberry Festival, held there every spring, and the Military Aviation Museum, which has a large collection of historic warbirds. The story of Grace Sherwood, the so-called 'Pungo Witch', is also known. Highlights of the area include the historic downtown intersection, the main US Coast Guard communications station, the Verizon Communications transmitter site adjacent to the Coast Guard site, de Navidad farms and orchards to choose from, roadside fruit and veg, Pungo Pizza & Ice Cream, a local restaurant with a large arcade that has become very popular, and the Pungo Ferry Bridge. Nearby is Nimmo United Methodist Church (pronounced Nim-o), built in 1791 and expanded in the early 1990s. It is the oldest church with original foundations in the region. Bishop Francis Asbury preached there.
