Rodophil is a rural unincorporated community in western Amelia County, Virginia located at the intersection of SR 616 (S. Genito Road) and the southern terminus of SR 620 (Rodophil Road). It straddles the ZIP code line 23002 (Amelia Court House, county seat) and 23083 (Jetersville) and is served by the Paineville Volunteer Fire Department. The community was named for Rodophil Jeter (17651843), whose Jetersville family was named after. Rodophile Jeter owned property in the area and was a state delegate and prominent figure in Amelia County government in the early 1800s. Variations (or possibly misspellings) of the name in older sources include 'Rhodophil' and 'Rodolphil' . Rodophil had its own post office from 1835 and apparently until the early 20th century. The structure may have stood on Route 620 at the entrance to Ingleside, just north of Route 616. In the final days of the Civil War, during what was known as the Appomattox Campaign, contingents of Union and Confederate soldiers passed through the area. , although no significant engagement took place in Rodophile. The last major battle fought by General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia took place on April 6, a few miles southwest at Sayler's Creek on the border between Amelia and Prince Edward counties. Lee visited Ulysses S. Grant in Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Built about 1923 or 1924, Reed Rock School was one of several Rosenwald schools in Amelia County. The plan was for a 2-acre campus with a building to house a teacher. The exact location of the structure is unknown, but present-day Reed Rock Road (SR 621) curves northwest of Rodophil in a wide arc. In the early 20th century, the Rosenwald School Project was a community initiative that established thousands of institutions throughout the South, primarily to educate African-American children. Ingleside, a home on Rodophil Road with ties to the Jeter family, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
