Sandbridge, Virginia is a coastal Virginia Beach community on the coast of the Currituck Banks Peninsula at the northern tip of the Outer Banks. To the east is the Atlantic Ocean, to the west is the Back Bay of Currituck Sound, and to the south is the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. To the north, Sandbridge borders the US Navy Dam Neck Facility. Near the southern end of Sandbridge is Little Island Park, operated by the City of Virginia Beach. Sandbridge Beach runs approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometers) north-south along the beach. The only public road access to the community is Sandbridge Road, which is near the north end of Sandbridge and connects it to businesses and neighborhoods in the Princess Anne neighborhood of Virginia Beach. Local residents had the privilege of stopping at the adjacent Dam Neck Naval Facility (with permission) to shorten their commute. A special guard was stationed at the south entrance to the base, granting or denying travelers access. However, in the post-9/11 atmosphere, the 'back door' was closed for security reasons. By 2025, the City of Virginia Beach plans to complete the Nimmo Parkway extension, which would divide the street between Sandbridge and its closest neighbors in Lago Mar. It would also create a much more convenient connection to malls, stores, and Mulino Rosso restaurants, the Palace of Justice and more. Along with the new road, the Nimmo multi-use trail would also be widened, making Sandbridge accessible on foot and by bicycle. Known for its somewhat remote location, Sandbridge sees fewer visitors than the main tourist hub of Virginia Beach a few miles north. The Virginia Beach EMS Lifeguard Division protects the water at Sandbridge. They operate four stalls on Market Place Beach and ten stalls on Little Island Beach. In the remaining waters where there are no lifeguards stationed, four lifeguards are on constant patrol. Lifeguards are on duty from 9.30am to 5.30pm. M. to 6:00 p.m. daily Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Sandbridge consists primarily of single family homes; there are also four condos. Many residential properties can be rented by the day, week or month. The ratio of year-round residents to renters would be approximately 1:5. Several homes on the Atlantic were lost in the mid-1990s, but sand-filling efforts have succeeded in restoring the beach. At one point it was not uncommon to see a banker's horse that had strayed too far north. Horses were known to cause nuisance by eating garden greenery and were occasionally hit by vehicles. Additional fences have been erected south of the Virginia-NC border in recent years to try to stem this problem. Major League Baseball third baseman Ryan Zimmerman grew up in Sandbridge and currently owns a vacation home there. Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell owns two properties in Sandbridge.
