Sandston is a census-designated place (CDP) in Henrico County, Virginia, USA, just outside the state capitol of Richmond. The population was 7,571 at the 2010 census. It was designated a Henrico County Historic District in 2021. The Battle of Seven Pines took place nearby in 1862. It was the second largest casualty to date after the Battle of Shiloh. The battle was brutal and inconclusive, but it had a profound impact on the course of the war. After General Johnston's injury, President Jefferson Davis appoints Robert E. Lee to command the Confederate armies. Lee then launched the Seven Days' Battles which resulted in the withdrawal of Northern forces at the end of June. It was the most the North had gained in this Richmond, Virginia offensive. During World War I, several houses for NCOs and privates were built in the area. After the war, an investment group he led bought the land and buildings as surplus real estate. The community was named Sandston for Oliver Sands, president of the Richmond and Fairfield Railway, the electric railroad line that ran through Highland Springs and Fair Oaks to Seven Pines National Cemetery. The community was later served by the Fairfield Transit Company which operated an existing bus barn in Seven Pines and the former trolley barn in Richmond on North 29th Street in 2005. The highway from Richmond through Highland Springs to Seven Pines was called 'Nine Mile Road' due to its distance from the tram line.
