Spencer is an unincorporated community in Henry County, Virginia, USA, named for its first settler, James Spencer Sr., who moved to Henry County with his sons from Loudoun County in the 18th century. Spencer's son, Ensign James Spencer Jr., died of wounds sustained during the Revolutionary War. (After his death, his widow remarried Nathaniel Bassett.) Spencer was the founding site of the Spencer Bros. Tobacco Company, as well as D.H. Spencer & Sons Tobacco, both founded by the Spencer family, with offices in Spencer and later in Martinsville, Danville and elsewhere. The family business later grew into one of the largest manufacturers of chewing tobacco in the country under the well-known brand name 'Calhoun'. The Spencer family built their tobacco plantation, Grassdale Farm, starting in the 18th century. Grassdale, formerly called The Homestead, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Spencer family also controlled the Danville & Western Railroad (later to become the Southern Railroad), which stopped in the city, as well as a small collection of other buildings, including a post office, doctor's house, and other dependent buildings. The family then sold its tobacco business to RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company in one of the industry's first consolidations. The D.H. Spencer and Sons and Spencer Brothers companies agreed in December 1903 to incorporate Reynolds in exchange for stock in the company. RJ Reynolds grew up near Critz, Virginia, and he and the Spencers were bitter rivals. Grassdale Farm was once owned by Thomas Jefferson Penn, who established Chinqua-Penn Plantation outside Reidsville, North Carolina, where Penn's tobacco manufacturing interests were located. The Spencer and Penn families are related (Jeff Penn's mother was Annie Spencer Penn and the Spencer coat of arms appears above the Chinqua-Penn entrance). 'Jeff' Penn sold Grassdale to his first cousin Margaret Dillard (ne Spencer) Shackelford and her husband Dr. . John Armstrong Shackelford, who later restored the house. In addition to Grassdale Farm, Spencer-Penn School and Aurora are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Margaret Spencer Shackelford's sister Mary Holt married Kennon C. Whittle, a Virginia Court of Appeals judge who lived in Belleview, which was built by their common ancestor, Major John Redd. A third sister, Blanche Spencer, married Julian H. Robertson Sr. of Salisbury, North Carolina, a textile company executive, private investor, and philanthropist. Spencer is part of the Martinsville Micropolitan Statistical Area.
