Wallops Island is a 16 square kilometer island in Accomack County, Virginia, which is part of the Virginia Barrier Islands which stretch along the east coast of the United States of America. It is located south of Chincoteague Island, a popular tourist destination. Wallops Island, originally known as Kegotank Island, was granted by the Crown to John Wallop on April 29, 1692. Ownership was divided over the years until the Commonwealth of Virginia seized the property in 1876 and 1877 instead of the unpaid taxes. Beginning in 1877, ownership was divided and subdivided again until 1889, when it was held by various trustees of the Wallops Island Club. The club was incorporated in 1933 as the Wallops Island Association, Inc. and acquired ownership. Association members and their families spent their summers fishing and swimming on the island. Until the mid-1940s the association cared for sheep, cows and ponies in the area. In 1947, the US Navy began using the upper two-thirds of the island to test aerial munitions on a charter basis. The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the forerunner of NASA, leased the last 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) for rocket launch facilities. The island is primarily used for Wallops flight facilities, including the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, although for directional reasons the name also refers to the peninsular area surrounding the island. The island is home to the Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuge. Part of the WWII film Our Father was filmed on Wallops Island.
