Winterham (also called 'Ham' according to the USGS) is a mostly rural unincorporated community in central Amelia County, Virginia, United States. It is off US 360 at the north end of SR 628 (Butlers Road), 3 miles northeast of the town of Amelia Court House, the county seat of Amelia County. Its elevation is 338 feet (103 m) above sea level. The exact origin of the name Winterham is unclear, but dates back to at least the mid-18th century; The suffix '-ham', as it is most commonly used in various place names, derives from Scots hame or Old English hm, meaning 'house', 'estate', or 'village'. The earliest use of 'Winterham' probably referred not to the town but to Winterham Plantation, about 4 miles to the northwest, whose mansion and outbuildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. In the town it was set up a Winterham Post Office in 1853, and by the early 20th century, the town was a goods station on what was then the Southern Railway, originally the Richmond and Danville Railway. The train station and post office are now closed. The rail line, which runs parallel to US 360 before the highway turns southeast at Winterham, is still used by freight trains and is now owned by Norfolk Southern Railway. The Morefield Mine, one of several profitably operating mines in Amelia County, is located off Highway 628 about a mile southeast of Winterham on an unusually long and thick vein of pegmatite containing several rare minerals. . Since opening in 1929, Morefield Mine has produced mica, feldspar and gemstones, many of museum quality, and serves as a mine, a tourist attraction and sometimes both at the same time. Amelia County is home to some of the largest deposits of mica and feldspar in Virginia.
