Chimney Point is a peninsula in the city of Addison, Vermont that juts out into Lake Champlain through a narrowing. It is one of the main and most strategic places in the Champlain Valley. For thousands of years, the site has been inhabited by Native Americans. In 1731 it was colonized by the French, who built fortifications and houses on both sides of the lake. With the Crown Point peninsula across the strait, the area was the scene of conflict between Britain and France, who vied for control of North America. During the American Revolutionary War, Chimney Point was occupied by the American and British armies at different times. With the end of the war in 1783, American settlers moved back to the Champlain Valley. In 1785, a regular lake ferry service was established to and from Chimney Point. A tavern once frequented by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison served travelers and the community. In 1929, the first bridge over Lake Champlain was dedicated. It increased traffic and improved communications between Vermont and upstate New York. After the discovery of decaying pillars in 2009, this bridge was torn down and replaced by a new bridge that opened in 2011. Chimney Point is a Vermont State Historic Site featuring a tavern dating back to 1785 and tells the story of three cultures, Native American, French, Colonial and Early American.
