Chimacum is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Washington, USA, in the center of the major agricultural area of the eastern Olympic Peninsula. It received its name from the Chimakum (also spelled Chemakum or Chimacum) group of Indians who lived there until the late 19th century but have now disappeared as a distinct cultural group. Chimacum Creek is named after the Chimakum, a Native American people called the Aqoklo who lived in the northeastern part of the Olympic Peninsula until the mid-19th century and whose economy, culture and religion were based on salmon fishing. Their main settlements were at Port Townsend Bay on the Quimper peninsula and at Port Ludlow Bay to the south. According to tradition, the Chimakum were a remnant of a group of Quileutes who had been swept in their canoes across a pass in the Olympic Mountains by a great flood and settled on the other side of the peninsula. In 1855, Twana and Chimakum, along with Klallam, signed the Point No Point treaty establishing a reservation at the mouth of the Skokomish River near the southern end of Hood Canal. One of the Chimakum signatories to the treaty was Chief Kulkakhan, also known as General Pierce. Later, most of the Chimakum merged with the S'Klallam and Skokomish tribes, where their descendants still reside. The Chimacum Valley remains and retains its identity as a progressive agricultural area with many small local farms, a full service grocery store selling local produce, and a Community Farmers Market held every Sunday June through October at 10:00am M at 14:00 M. The area is also served by a local branch of the National Barn of the Order of Patrons of Livestock, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2018. In May 2014, the Jefferson County Land Trust, in cooperation with the State University of Washington, has designated more than 15 acres of vacant land. The arable land in central Chimacum is set aside for stock farming and is called Chimacum Commons. This project features an education and commerce center that will provide affordable community housing and workspaces for agronomy and horticulture students and smallholder farmers to develop, advance and master their craft. Chimacum is the main campus serving unincorporated communities in eastern Jefferson County south of Port Townsend and north of Quilcene, including Chimacum, Port Hadlock, Irondale, Marrowstone Island, Port Ludlow and Shine. Betty MacDonald's book The Egg and I, on which the films Ma and Pa Kettle were based, details the author's experiences on a chicken farm on what became Egg & I Road in Chimacum. Linda Perhacs' 1970 album Parallelograms includes the song 'Chimacum rain', a work inspired by the natural environment of Chimacum.
