Mount Baker (Lummi: Qw'm Kwlshn; Nooksack: Kw'eq Smaenit or Kwelshn), also known as Koma Kulshan or simply Kulshan, is a 3,286 m high, glacier-covered active andesitic stratovolcano in the Cascades North Cascades volcanic arc of Washington in the United States. Mount Baker has the most thermally active crater in the Cascade Range after Mount St. Helens. About 30 miles (48 km) east of the town of Bellingham in Whatcom County, Mount Baker is the youngest volcano in the Mount Baker Volcanic Field. While volcanism here lasted about 1.5 million years, the present volcanic cone is probably no more than 140,000 years old and possibly no more than 80-90,000 years old. The older volcanic structures have largely been eroded by glaciation. After Mount Rainier, Mount Baker has the densest ice cover of any volcano in the Cascade Range; The volume of snow and ice on Mount Baker, at 1.79 km3, is greater than all other Cascade volcanoes (except Rainier) combined. It's also one of the snowiest places in the world; In 1999, Mount Baker Ski Resort, 9 miles (14.5 km) to the northeast, set the world record for recorded snowfall in a single season: 1,140 inches (29 m; 95 ft). Mount Baker is the third-tallest mountain in Washington and the fifth-tallest in the Cascade Range, excluding Little Tahoma Peak, a subsidiary peak of Mount Rainier, and Shastina, a subsidiary peak of Mount Shasta. Located in the Mount Baker Wilderness, it is visible from much of Greater Victoria, Nanaimo and Greater Vancouver in British Columbia, and as far south as Seattle (and Tacoma on a clear day) as far south as Washington. Indigenous peoples have known of the mountain for thousands of years, but the first written record of the mountain comes from the Spanish explorer Gonzalo Lpez de Haro, who mapped it in 1790 as Gran Montaa del Carmelo, 'Great Mount Carmel'. Explorer George Vancouver renamed the mountain after 3rd Lieutenant Joseph Baker of HMS Discovery, who sighted it on April 30, 1792.
