Mount St. Helens (known as Lawetlat'la to the Cowlitz and Loowit Indians or Louwala-Clough to the Clickites) is an active stratovolcano in Skamania County, Washington in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It is located 83 km northeast of Portland, Oregon and 158 km south of Seattle. Mount St. Helens gets its English name from the British diplomat Lord St. Helens, a friend of explorer George Vancouver, who explored the area in the late 18th century. The volcano is part of the Cascades Volcanic Arc, a section of the Pacific Ring of Fire. The major eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980 remains the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in US history. 57 people died; 200 houses, 47 bridges, 24 km of railways and 298 km of roads destroyed. A huge debris avalanche triggered by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake caused a lateral eruption that lowered the mountain's summit elevation from 2,950 m (9,677 ft) to 2,549 m (8,363 ft) and created an iron of horse 1.6 km (1 mile) wide. in the shape of a crater. The debris avalanche had a volume of 0.6 cubic miles (2.5 km3). The 1980 eruption destroyed terrestrial ecosystems near the volcano. Conversely, aquatic ecosystems in the region benefited greatly from the ash levels, allowing for rapid proliferation of life. Six years after the eruption, most of the lakes in the region were back to normal. After erupting in 1980, the volcano experienced continuous volcanic activity until 2008. Geologists predict future eruptions will be more destructive as the configuration of the lava domes requires higher pressure to erupt. However, Mount St. Helens is a popular hiking spot and is climbed year-round. In 1982, President Ronald Reagan and the United States Congress established the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.
