Wenatchee (/wnti/ weh-NA-tchee) is the county seat and largest city of Chelan County, Washington, United States. The population within the city limits was 31,925 in 2010 and is estimated to have increased to 34,360 in 2019. Wenatchee is located in the north central part of the state at the confluence of the Columbia and Wenatchee Rivers near the east foot of the Range waterfall on the side west of the Columbia River from the city of East Wenatchee. The Columbia River forms the border between Chelan and Douglas County. Wenatchee is the capital of the Wenatchee-East Wenatchee, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Chelan and Douglas counties (total population approximately 110,884). However, the 'Wenatchee Valley area' generally refers to the land between Rocky Reach and Rock Island Dam on both sides of the Columbia River, including East Wenatchee, Rock Island, and Malaga. The city is named after the neighboring Wenatchi Indian tribe. The name is a Sahaptin word meaning 'river that arises [or whose source] comes from the canyons' or 'rainbow-clad'. Awenatchela means 'people at the source [of a river]'. The city of Wenatchee shares its name with the Wenatchee River, Lake Wenatchee and Wenatchee National Forest. Wenatchee is also known as the 'Apple Capital of the World' due to the large number of orchards in the valley. The city is sometimes referred to as 'the ring of the great Northwest belt of power'. The 'Great Northwest Power Belt' is a metaphor for the series of dams on the Columbia River. Rock Island Dam is closest to the center of this 'belt' and was therefore called the 'loop'. This proverb appears at the top of every issue of the Wenatchee newspaper, The Wenatchee World, but is no longer commonly used elsewhere.
