Port Washington is the county seat of Ozaukee County in the US state of Wisconsin. Located on the western shore of Lake Michigan just east of Interstate 43, the community is a suburb of the Milwaukee metropolitan area, 27 miles north of the city of Milwaukee. The city's man-made harbor at the mouth of Sauk Creek was dredged in the 1870s and served as a trading port until the early 2000s. The population was 11,250 as of the 2010 census and a Native American village at the mouth of the Sauk Creek, the current site of historic downtown Port Washington. In 1830, the US federal government forcibly evicted the Native Americans and the first settlers arrived in 1835 and named their settlement Wisconsin City before renaming it Port Washington after President George Washington. In the late 1840s and early 1850s, the township ran for the Washington County seat. Municipal dissent and voter fraud kept Washington County from having a permanent seat of government until the Wisconsin State Legislature stepped in, creating Ozaukee County out of the eastern third of Washington County and making Port Washington is the new county seat. Port Washington has been connected to the Great Lakes for much of its history. Early settlers used boats to transport goods such as lumber, fish, and grain, although the community's early years were marred by shipwrecks, which led the federal government to build Port Harbor Washington in 1871. Commercial fishing in Port Washington was thriving in the mid of the 20th century. In the 19th century and early 1930s, the Port Washington Power Plant used the port to receive large shipments of burning coal to generate electricity. The commercial port closed in 2004 when the power plant switched to natural gas for fuel, but the community maintains an active marina. In the 21st century, Port Washington celebrates its lakeside heritage with museums, public festivals, sport fishing tournaments and sailboat races.
