Thiensville is a city in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The community is located on the west bank of a bend in the Milwaukee River, bounded on all sides by the city of Mequon, and is a suburb of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. At the 2010 census, the population was 3,235. Thiensville was home to a Potawatomi people in the early 1800s before white settlers arrived in the 1830s and 1840s. These were German immigrants who were members of freethinking societies. A well-known free spirit was Joachim Heinrich Thien, after whom the city is named. Thien played an important role in early Mequon city policy, organizing the Thiensville Volunteer Fire Department. Freethinkers opposed organized religion and actively prevented the planting of community churches for the first eight decades of its history. Thiensville grew and prospered in the late 19th century when it became a railroad station. The community became more urban, with shops, mills and agricultural services in the rural town of Mequon. The City of Thiensville was officially incorporated in 1910. Mequon and Thiensville experienced significant development during post-World War II suburbanization, and Mequon was incorporated as a city in 1957. The two communities are closely related and have a chamber of commerce, library and a school district. In July 2005, CNNMoney.com ranked Thiensville and Mequon 19th on their list of the 100 Best Places to Live in the United States.
