Farmington is a city in Marion County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 389 at the 2020 census. The community is best known for being the site of the 1968 Farmington mine disaster. The community got its name from the fact that a large portion of the early settlers were farmers. The area was first settled by James Goodin in the late 18th century, by Nicholas Wood and his family, and by Jacob Straight and his family in 1770. A later settler, Joseph Morgan, built a mill here in 1801 It was incorporated into Marion County as the Town of Farmington in 1896, but was previously known as Willeyvile, Willeytown and Underwood. Although it was officially called Farmington in 1896 when the B and O Railroad passed through the city, its stations were called Underwood as there were many towns with the same name. The town was also home to Jamison Coal and Coke Co. Number 08 mines (mined 1926, then sealed 1940s) and Consolidated Coal Co. Number 09 mines (mined 1954 and 1968, then sealed 1978) at Farmington High School 'Farmers' and North Marion High School Huskies, as well as several small family businesses that are still in operation today. The small town is located between Buffalo Creek and the Allegheny Mountains, approximately 6 miles west of Fairmont, West Virginia, the county seat of Marion County.
