Harpers Ferry is a historic city in Jefferson County, West Virginia, United States, in the lower Shenandoah Valley. The population was 285 at the 2020 census. It is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers where the U.S. states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet. It is the easternmost city in West Virginia and was the northernmost point of Territory controlled by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. It has been called 'the best vantage point in all of the South.' Once spelled with an apostrophe, 'Harper's Ferry,' the town is so named because it was a ferry service owned and operated by Robert Harper in the 18th century. The United States Board on Geographic Names, whose Committee on National Names is reluctant to include apostrophes in official place names, adopted the standard spelling of 'Harpers Ferry' in 1891. By far the most significant event in history of the city is the event John Brown raided the Harpers Ferry armory in 1859. Prior to the American Civil War, Harpers Ferry was a manufacturing city and a major transportation hub. (See Virginius Island and Harpers Ferry Armory.) The city's primary economic activity in the 20th and 21st centuries has been tourism. John Brown's Fort is the most visited tourist attraction in the state of West Virginia. The Appalachian Trail headquarters is there, not downtown, but close and easy to get to, and the National Park Service uses the old Storer College buildings for one of its four national training centers. The National Park Service is Harpers Ferry's largest employer in the 21st century. The lower part of town has been redeveloped by the National Park Service. By the end of the American Civil War it was in ruins, although the subsequent flooding of the river did not help. 'The fact that Harpers Ferry was primarily an industrial town in the 19th century is not reflected in the sights, sounds and smells of the town today.'
