Tuskegee (/tskichi/) is a city in Macon County, Alabama, United States. It was founded and laid out in 1833 by General Thomas Simpson Woodward, a veteran of the Creek War under Andrew Jackson, and laid siege to the county that year. It was founded in 1843. It is the largest city in Macon County. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,395, up from 9,865 in 2010 and 11,846 in 2000. Tuskegee has been prominent in African American history since the 19th century and is a major influence on United States history. Prior to the American Civil War, the area had been developed for cotton plantations that depended on enslaved African Americans. After the war, many freedmen continued to work on rural area plantations devoted to agriculture, mostly cotton as a staple. In 1881, Lewis Adams, a former slave whose father Jesse Adams, a white slave owner, founded Tuskegee Normal School (now Tuskegee University, a historically black university) provided him with an education. Its first founding director was Booker T. Washington, who built a national reputation and philanthropic network to support the education of freedmen and their children. The Tuskegee Veterans Administration Medical Center was founded in 1923, initially for approximately 300,000 African-American World War I veterans in the South when public facilities were segregated. 27 buildings have been constructed on the 464-hectare campus. The city was the subject of a civil rights case, Gomillion v. Lightfoot (1960) in which the United States Supreme Court ruled that in 1957 the state legislature violated the Fifteenth Amendment by tampering with city limits as a 28-page cipher that excluded the city, rigged nearly all black voters and residents, and none of the whites . voters or residents. The city limits were restored in 1961 after the verdict.
