Broadkill Beach is an unincorporated beach community in Sussex County, Delaware, United States, located on Delaware Bay north of the mouth of the Broadkill River. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware metropolitan area. The word 'kill' comes from the Dutch word 'kil'. The small community is an increasingly popular tourist destination. It consists mainly of holiday homes, although there are a significant number of year-round residents. In the spring, summer and fall, many properties are offered by the week or, in the off season, for the weekends. In 2016, a major beach infill project was completed, greatly expanding the beach, creating a large new dune, and attracting increased community interest and investment. Broadkill Beach offers direct beach access to Delaware Bay for swimming, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, surf fishing and other water activities. However, due to limited public parking, the beach remains sparsely populated even on the busiest summer days. The community is bordered to the west by Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, making it a haven for nature lovers and bird watchers, among other wildlife. Broadkill Beach is an official sanctuary for the horseshoe crab, the state marine animal of Delaware and a 'distinct species' of the Delaware Bay Estuary. Broadkill Beach borders the Plum Island Beach Nature Preserve at the southern end of Bayshore Drive. The community offers vacationers a more private, quiet, and less crowded alternative to rentals in Delaware's larger beach communities while still being close to resorts and activities. Rehoboth Beach is located about 20 minutes south of Broadkill Beach. The oldest section of Broadkill dates to the mid-20th century and is located south and north of the intersection of Delaware Route 16 (DE 16) and Bayshore Drive. This area includes intersections of streets named after presidents (south of DE 16) and southern and southwestern states (north of DE 16). There are many smaller older chalets in this area. Further north and south along Bayshore Drive are larger, more modern vacation homes. Many first-time visitors compare the remote setting of Broadkill Beach to the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but much smaller and with easier access to Washington, DC, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Broadkill Beach's only shop is The Broadkill Store, a general store selling sandwiches, groceries, bait and tackle, beach toys, souvenirs, and homemade donuts on the weekends. Kayak and paddle board rentals can also be arranged at the shop. Every year, Broadkill Beach residents hold a family-friendly Fourth of July parade, and with the right view, fireworks can be seen from Cape May, New Jersey, Lewes, Rehoboth Beach, and other cities.
