Heeia (Hawaiian pronunciation: [hj]) is a census-designated place comprising several neighborhoods in the city and county of Honolulu and Koolaupoko County on the island of O'ahu north of Kneohe. In Hawaiian, the words hee ia mean 'carried' and allude to a victory achieved by people against others on leeward O'ahu, aided by a tsunami that carried the combatants out to sea. Heeia includes the valley of Haik and Heeia Kea. The population was 5,001 at the 2020 census. The area consists almost entirely of houses and apartments. Parts of Heeia are in Kneohe Bay, but due to private ownership of the property behind the coast, there is no public access. Notable people in the Heeia region include: * Haik Valley, a former US Coast Guard radio transmitter site with Haiku scales * Site of the former receiving tower of HYPO Station, the naval cryptanalysis station that did so much to crack Japanese naval codes in 1941-1942, culminating in the American victory at the Battle of Midway, regarded by most historians as a landmark turning point in the Pacific War. Their antenna location was He'eia, NOT the location of the HYPO station itself. The station's name HYPO comes from the phonetic letter 'H' because that's where the antenna was located in He'eia. * He'eia Fishpond, the largest remaining pond on O'ahu. Heeia Kea is a parish and small desolate valley separated from Heeia by Heeia Marsh and Kealohi Point. Here is the He'eia Kea Small Boat Harbour, the only pier and public pier in Kne'ohe Bay. Several fish ponds have been restored in recent years. Although fish ponds have been established on most of the islands, the greatest concentrations have been found at Keehi Lagoon, Pearl Harbor, and Kneohe Bay on Oahu. The US postal code for He'eia and He'eia Kea is the same as for Kne'ohe: 96744.
