Mkaha (Hawaiian for 'wild' or 'wild', pronounced [makh]) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Honolulu County, Hawaii, United States. It is a city on the Pacific coast, west of the Mkaha Valley and at the foot of Mount Ka'ala in the Wai'anae Mountains. It is the last of O'ahu's leeward cities. North of Mkaha there is no development, so there are no towns, petrol stations or restaurants. Mkaha's population was 8,278 at the 2010 census. It is located 35 miles northwest of Honolulu but is part of Honolulu County. In the Hawaiian language, their name means 'savage' or 'savage' and refers to the bandit group that was based in the Mkaha Valley. They hid and waited for unsuspecting bystanders to appear, then continued to loot them. Mkaha has a higher percentage of Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders than most settlements on O'ahu; 26.2% of the population was Pacific Islander residents in 2010. The Mkaha Resort hosts traditional Hawaiian craft fairs and other Hawaiian cultural programs on weekends to preserve Mkaha's native Hawaiian traditions. The city is best known for its surf breaks and history, Hawaiian temple, and Mkaha Beach Park, which is a nesting site for several species of sea turtles. Other water sports activities include surfing, scuba diving, canoe surfing, fishing, tandem surfing, body surfing and other recreational water sports. The Kne'ki Heiau is the most fully restored ancient heiau in Hawaii. It was excavated in 1970 by archaeologists from the Bishop Museum and is now open to the public Tuesday through Sunday. It was originally an agricultural temple dedicated to the god Lono in the 15th century. 200 years later it was transformed into a luakini in which human sacrifices were dedicated to the god K, a typical development which suggests that Mkaha now supported a population large enough to have its own chief.
