Basin is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Jefferson County, Montana, United States. It is located about 10 miles (16 km) southeast of the Continental Divide in a high, narrow gorge along Interstate 15 about halfway between Butte and Helena. Basin Creek flows roughly north-south through the basin and empties into the Boulder River on the south side of the settlement. At the 2010 census, the population was 212, up from 255 at the 2000 census. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of human habitation 10,000 years ago at a site near Clancy, 20 miles (32 km) northeast of the basin. From 2000 BC. about From the year 3000 a. until the mid-19th century, nomadic tribes hunted buffalo in the grassy valleys that stretch east from the Rocky Mountains to the plains. When miners found gold in and around Basin Creeks, the US government forced most of these Native American tribes off reservations. The basin overlies the Boulder Batholith, the bedrock that is home to many valuable minerals found in this part of Montana. After the city became a center for gold and silver mining, the basin's population peaked at about 1,500 in the first decade of the 20th century, but gradually declined as the mines were depleted. Abandoned mining equipment, closed or barricaded mine gates, and the ruins of a smelter and ore concentrator survived in the basin into the 21st century. Historic buildings from the basin's heyday make up much of the heart of CDP's small business district, which includes a fire station, post office, two restaurants, a bar, an arcade, and small specialty shops. Basin has a small elementary school, its own water system, and a low-power radio station. Local volunteers and elected trustees provide limited services to the colony, but the colony relies on the Jefferson County government for law enforcement and other services. From 1993 to 2011, the reservoir was home to the Montana Artists' Refuge.
