Bearcreek is an incorporated city in Carbon County, Montana, United States. It is part of the Billings, Montana metropolitan area. At the 2020 census, the population was 91. Bearcreek uses the mayor/council form of government. The town of Bearcreek gets its name from Bear Creek, which runs through the center of town. Born out of coal mining, Bearcreek grew rapidly after the construction of a short-distance railroad linking the Bearcreek mines to the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1906. Between 1906 and 1953, the Bearcreek mines produced large quantities of coal , which surpassed other regional sources. of the vast underground coal deposits. The mines were located along the stream and also in the surrounding lava flows. The development of coal mining after 1906 attracted miners to the area. They came from other parts of America, from Serbia, Montenegro, Germany, Scotland and Italy. Recent immigrants have established various ethnic communities with names such as Washoe, New Caledonia, Chickentown, Scotch Coulee, International and Stringtown on the steep hills leading up to Bearcreek. At one point in the 1920s and 1930s, Bearcreek's population, along with other surrounding small communities, numbered nearly 3,000. Bear Creek and surrounding communities had seven merchants, a bank, two hotels, two pool halls, a brickyard, numerous saloons, and Bearcreek had concrete boardwalks and its own water system. There were apparently no churches in the city. Bear Creek's economy was based on coal. The Smith Mine disaster in 1943, followed by a decline in demand for coal in the late 1940s and 1950s, led to the closure of the rail link and subsequently most of the collieries in 1953, and the population steadily declined to less of 100 people. Many buildings in Bearcreek and surrounding communities have been moved to other towns or demolished, with few buildings remaining. In town is the Bear Creek Saloon, which hosts pig racing throughout the year. In addition, every fall Bearcreek hosts the Montana Falconers Symposium, the state's largest gathering of falconry trainers and raptor enthusiasts. When the legality of hog racing wagers was challenged, a law was passed - Montana Code Annotated 23-5-502(b) - which states: 'Only the licensee of premises located in an incorporated civic corporation with less of 100 residents of or located outside the limits of any city or town incorporated and legally licensed to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption on premises pursuant to 5-23-119 may host an animal race and may host one or more swimming pools in The contest may only take place if it is against pigs, gerbils or hamsters and is held on the premises, but outside the internal areas of the facility where food and drink is commonly stored, prepared or served'.
