Bearmouth was a trading post for the mining camps of Beartown, Garnet, and Coloma Placer, located in the foothills north of Bearmouth in Granite County, Montana, USA. A pioneer family named Lannen operated the gold exchange and ferry service on the Clark Fork River. Bearmouth was not a mining camp, but rather a town that depended on the survival of other mining camp towns, such as nearby Garnet. In the late 19th century, high yield garnet ores were brought to Bearmouth to be shipped to smelters. When Garnet ceased to exist, Bearmouth did the same. However, the town was also an important stagecoach stopping point on the old Mullan Road. There was a two-story inn with a balcony where travelers could spend the night and a large stable still standing. In September 1841, Jesuit priest Pierre Jean De Smet traveled west through this region en route to St. Louis to establish a mission to the Flathead Indians in the Bitterroot Valley. The nearest town is Drummond, about 13km to the east. The closest major city is Missoula, about 40 miles west. The closest major city to the east is Butte, 80 miles southeast. The Hazel Marsh Papers [1] are a collection of papers from the many Lannen family businesses in Bearmouth. The collection includes documents from post offices, saloons and shops of all kinds, as well as financial and legal documents from . Also included in the collection are Bearmouth School District records and voter rolls. The collection also includes photography and memorabilia and is held in the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, K. Ross Toole Archives, University of Montana.
