In the 1890s there were nearly thirteen saloons (bars) here, as well as supermarkets, a barber shop, a commercial store and three hotels. Hotels were opened to passers-by or gold-diggers. Their rates generally ranged from $1 to $3, and poor miners who could not afford that price were allowed to sleep in the windowless attic for a shift.
