Rosendale is a village of approximately 1,350 people in the city of Rosendale in Ulster County, New York, United States. It was also a census-designated place called Rosendale Village until the 2010 US Census Bureau named it Rosendale Hamlet. On some maps, the place still appears as Rosendale. As of 2020, 'Hamlet' has been dropped from the CDP's name. The area was originally settled in the late 17th century by Jacob Rutsen, an Albany merchant, but did not become a major population center until 1825, when Rosendale cement was discovered in the area. The development of the cement industry and the growth of the Delaware and Hudson canals along Rondout Creek and Main Street led to significant economic development in Rosendale. The city's concrete has been used in the construction of a number of national monuments. The Wallkill Valley Railroad came to town in 1871, and its depot in town was the largest station on the Wallkill Valley Line. Rosendale was officially incorporated as a city in 1890. A fire in 1895 destroyed half of the city due to a lack of fire protection at the time. Throughout the 20th century, the decline of the natural cement industry caused Rosendale to suffer economically and lose its population. The city was also hit by a series of severe floods, and the mall began moving from Main Street to Route 32. In the 1970s, the city ran into serious problems with supply and service regulations, taxes, and stopped producing cement . The hippie movement brought many artists to the city at the time, leading to ideological clashes between newcomers and more conservative residents. In 1976, the city voted to dissolve its municipal problems, and on January 1, 1978, Rosendale disbanded. The city's mayor considered the resolution a work of conceptual art at the time of the vote and has published a book on the subject. After the breakup, the old town mall was revived by artists and businessmen who bought and restored abandoned buildings on Main Street. Many street festivals have taken place in Rosendale since 1990. The old town had several buildings of note, including four churches. Two notable bridges cross Rondout Creek in the city: a highway bridge carrying Route 32 and the Rosendale Trestle, a former railroad bridge currently being converted to a pedestrian footbridge. Joppenbergh Mountain, named after Rosendale's founder, borders the town and has been the site of several ski jumping and demining competitions.
