Staten Island (/sttn/ STAT-n) is a borough of New York City, coextensive with Richmond County, in the US state of New York. Located in the southwestern part of the city, the borough is separated from New Jersey by Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull and from the rest of New York City by New York Bay. With a population of 495,747 (as of the 2020 census), Staten Island is the least populous county but ranks third with an area of 58.5 square miles (152 km2). The island is home to the indigenous Lenape people and was settled by Dutch settlers in the 17th century. It was one of the original 12 counties of upstate New York. Staten Island merged with New York City in 1898. It was officially known as Richmond Borough until 1975 when it was changed to Staten Island Borough. Residents who feel neglected by city government sometimes refer to Staten Island as 'the forgotten borough'. The North Shore, especially the districts of St. George, Tompkinsville, Clifton and Stapleton, is the most urban area on the island. It includes the St. George Designated Historic District and the St. Paul's Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District, which includes stately Victorian homes. The East Coast is home to F.D.R. 2+1/2 miles (4 kilometers). Boardwalk, the fourth longest boardwalk in the world. Site of 17th-century Dutch and French Huguenot settlement, South Shore grew rapidly in the 1960s and 1970s and is now primarily suburban. The west coast is the least populated and most industrial part of the island. Automobile traffic can access the borough from Brooklyn via the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge and from New Jersey via the Outerbridge Crossing, Goethals Bridge and Bayonne Bridge. Staten Island is served by Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus lines and an MTA rapid transit line, the Staten Island Railroad, which connects the St. George Ferry Terminal with Tottenville. Staten Island is the only borough not connected to the New York City subway system. The free Staten Island Ferry connects the borough to Manhattan via New York Harbor. Offers views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and Lower Manhattan.
