What to Know Before Donating to A Charity in West virginia?
West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeastern regions of the United States. It borders Pennsylvania to the north and east, Maryland to the east and northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. West Virginia is the 10th smallest state by area and the 12th least populous state with a population of 1,793,716. The capital and largest city is Charleston. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863 and was an important frontier state during the American Civil War. It was the only state to seced as a Confederate state, the second to seced as a state after Maine's secession from Massachusetts, and one of two states (along with Nevada) to merge with the United States during the Union Civil War it was accepted. Some of its residents owned slaves, but most were yeoman farmers, and delegates enacted the gradual abolition of slavery in the new state constitution. The state legislature abolished slavery in the state and simultaneously ratified the 13th amendment on February 3, 1865, abolishing slavery throughout the country. Northwestern Virginia straddles Pennsylvania and Ohio, forming a tri-state area with Wheeling and Weirton directly across the border from Greater Pittsburgh. Huntington in the Southwest is near Ohio and Kentucky, while Martinsburg and Harpers Ferry in the Eastern Panhandle is considered part of the Washington metropolitan area between Maryland and Virginia. West Virginia is commonly part of several geographic regions of the United States, including the Mid-Atlantic, Southern Highlands, and Southeastern United States. It is the only state wholly within the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission; The area is commonly referred to as "Appalachia". The state is known for its mountains and foothills, its historically significant logging and mining industries, and its political and labor history. It is also known for a wide variety of outdoor recreation including skiing, rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing and hunting. From the Great Depression until the 1990s, the state overwhelmingly voted for the Democratic Party due to its tradition of labor politics. Since then, the state has become heavily Republican and is considered a "dark red" state federally. Other named names for the state include Vandalia, Kanawha, Appalachia and West Virginia. The capital was originally Wheeling before moving to Charleston, back to Wheeling, and finally back to Charleston. The first governor was Arthur Boreman.
