The Bighorn National Forest is a United States national forest in northern Wyoming, United States, covering more than 1.1 million acres (4,500 km2). Established in 1897 as a United States Forest Preserve, it is one of the oldest forest areas protected by the United States government. Located at the eastern end of the Continental Divide, the forest extends from the Montana border 80 miles (130 km) along the crest of the Bighorn Mountains, an outlying mountain range separated from the rest of the Rockies by the Bighorn Basin. Elevations range from 5,000 feet (1,500 m) along the sage and grass-covered plains at the base of the mountains to 13,189 feet (4,020 m) at the top of Cloud Peak, the highest point in the Bighorn Range. Approximately 99% of the country is above 1,500 meters (4,900 ft). The forest gets its name from the Bighorn River, which is partly fed by forest streams. Mountain streams are fed primarily by melting snow and snowmelt mixed with torrential rain. Within the forest is the Cloud Peak Wilderness area, where no motorized or mechanical devices are permitted. The only access to the 189,000 acres (765 km2) of wilderness is on foot or horseback. There are 1,500 miles (2,400km) of forest trails, as well as 32 improved campgrounds, lodges, and three scenic drives. United States Route 14 in Wyoming, also known as the Bighorn Scenic Byway, runs through the center of the 30-mile-wide forest. Medicine Wheel Passage (U.S. Highway 14A) runs north through Medicine Wheel National Historic Landmark, while Cloud Peak Skyway (U.S. Route 16) crosses it and is at the highest pass in the forest (Powder River Pass 9,677 ft/2,950 m ) .the southern part of the forest. Forest headquarters are in Sheridan, Wyoming. There are local ranger district offices in Buffalo, Lovell and Sheridan. Visitor centers are located at Burgess Junction and near Shell Falls. Burgess Junction, at the intersection of Route 14 and Route 14A, about 25 miles from Dayton, also has a ranger station, visitor accommodations, and campgrounds.
