The Roosevelt Lodge Historic District includes the area surrounding Roosevelt Lodge in the northern part of Yellowstone National Park near Tower Junction. The neighborhood includes 143 buildings ranging in size from cabins to the lodge, built beginning in 1919. The lodge was originally designed as a field laboratory for students and educators researching the park. Later it became a tourist camp, specially designed to accommodate tourists by car. The lodge is a scaled-down version of the National Park Service farmhouse style. The location is near the famous fields of US Presidents Chester A. Arthur and Theodore Roosevelt. To commemorate Roosevelt's 1903 visit, the Wylie Permanent Camping Company established a tented camp called Camp Roosevelt. The lodge was built in 1919 and, along with nearby outbuildings built in subsequent years, was intended to provide a ranch-like feel. The important buildings are: * Roosevelt Lodge - The single story L-shaped log cabin was built in 1919-20 and offers a common meeting space and dining room for visitors and staff. The larger rooms feature exposed wooden beams in a suspended ceiling. * Store: Built in 1936 for the Haynes Company, a small 'block' style L-shaped log structure with paneling lined between vertical logs. * Keeper's Cabin - Built in 1924 by the Yellowstone Company, a single story log cabin. * Director's Cabin: Built by the Yellowstone Park Company in the 1920's, a single story wood frame cabin. * Power Plant: A separate facility that houses the auxiliary generator. * Toilets: More logis-out style buildings. These buildings are surrounded by a variety of farm buildings and visitor cabins. Cabins can be divided into four main types: * Log-Out Cabins: Built between 1924 and 1942, flush horizontal wall structure and wood panel accents. * Board & Batten Cabins: Built 1929 - 1947, framed with board & batten siding and exposed wood joists or purlins. * Flush Horizontal Sidewall Cabins - Built after the 1920's in frame construction with flush sidewalls and exposed timber purlins. * Studs Out Cabins: Last built historic cabins, moved to Roosevelt from other locations, with exposed sills and interior trim. Roosevelt Lodge is located near Tower Junction on Grand Loop Road, which itself is a National Historic District.
