Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia is a run-down mansion that's part of a historic district that has been home to several notable families in American history. James Oglethorpe first built a hunting lodge on Cumberland Island in 1736 which he called Dungeness. Oglethorpe named the town after the Dungeness headland on the south coast of England. Dungeness was then the heir to Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene, who acquired 11,000 acres (45 km2) of land on the island in exchange for bad debt. In 1803, his widow, Catharine Littlefield Greene, built a four-story tabby mansion on a Timucuan shell hill. During the War of 1812 the island was occupied by the British who used the house as their headquarters. In 1818, Henry 'Light-Horse Harry' Lee, a cavalry commander during the Revolutionary War and father of Robert E. Lee, stayed at home until his death on March 25, 1818, and was cared for by Greene's daughter, Louisa. he grew up buried in a nearby cemetery with full military honors awarded by an American fleet stationed in St. Marys, Georgia. The house was abandoned in the American Civil War and burned down in 1866. In 1880, Thomas M. Carnegie, brother of Andrew Carnegie, bought the property and began building a new mansion on the site. The 59-room Queen Anne-style mansion and grounds were completed after Carnegie's death in 1886. His wife Lucy continued to live in Dungeness and built other properties for their children, including Greyfield for Margaret Carnegie Ricketson, Plum Orchard for and Stafford Plantation. At that time the Carnegies owned 90% of the island. The Carnegies left Dungeness in 1925. In 1959 Dungeness Manor was destroyed by fire believed to be arson. The ruins are now protected by the National Park Service as part of the Cumberland Island National Seashore. They were acquired by the Park Service in 1972. The main house includes part of the larger Historic District, which includes utility rooms, farm buildings, laundries, cisterns, and a variety of other buildings. The neighborhood forms a planned and landscaped whole. The most prominent supporting structure is the Tabby House or Nathanael Greene Cottage, which dates from the Greene family period.
