Iota is a city in Acadia Parish, Louisiana. At the 2010 census, the population was 1,500. Iota's history is associated with Pointe-aux-Loups (Wolf's Point in French), one of the oldest place names in southwest Louisiana, and the location of mineral springs, which began attracting many visitors around 1858 The ancient settlement was located on the Bayou des Cannes, about two miles west of the modern city of Iota. A post office named Cartville for the first postmaster Samuel Cart was established near Pointe-aux-Loups in 1884. Ten years later, a branch of the Midland to Eunice railroad bypassed Cartville d'East for about a mile. The railroad established a depot at a point on the line closest to the settlements of Cartville and Pointe-aux-Loups and named it Iota. The Cartville Post Office changed to Iota in 1900. CC Duson is credited with being the founder of Iota. It was he who promoted the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad line to Eunice, the new town he founded in the parish of St. Landry. At the same time, in 1894, Duson acquired the land on which Iota stands today, a 160-acre property that had been settled by Archille Doucet in 1835. Duson divided the land into council lots and sold them. Duson was the principal initiator of the formation of the Acadia Canal Company in nearby Iota and president of the town's first rice mill in 1901, two companies said to be responsible for Iota's early economic development. Iota and its people continued to experience prosperity throughout the 20th century, with agriculture and petroleum being major sectors of the local economy. During this period, rice and later crayfish became the most important crops in the region. In the 1990s, an unusually large number of people on Iota were found to carry Tay-Sachs, a rare genetic disorder. Iota was portrayed in the 2002 novel No Place Louisiana by Martin Pousson. Iota is the headquarters of American Legion Post #371 and many veterans of foreign wars. Iota is part of Crowley's micropolitan statistical area.
