Fort Leonard Wood is a U.S. Army training facility in the Missouri Ozarks. The main gate is located at the southern end of the city of St. Robert. The post was created in December 1940 and named after General Leonard Wood (former Chief of Staff) in January 1941. Originally intended for the training of infantry troops, it was converted into an engineering training post in 1941 with the creation of the Replacement Engineer Training Center. During the Second World War, Italian and German prisoners of war were interned in the fortress. In 1984, as part of the base realignment and closure, most of the US Army Engineer School operations were consolidated at Fort Leonard Wood. Officer training had previously been conducted at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. In 1999, as part of the base realignment and closure, Fort McClellan, Alabama was closed and the U.S. Army Chemical Corps and Military Police Corps schools were relocated to Fort Leonard Wood, which was also renamed U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center. In 2009, the US Army Maneuver Support Center was renamed the US Army Maneuver Support Center of Excellence (MSCoE). The 'Center of Excellence' designation has been granted to nearly every training institution in the United States Army. The current commanding general is Maj. Gen. James Bonner, and the staff sergeant is Staff Sergeant Randolph Delapena.
