Ammon is a rural unincorporated community in the southeast corner of Amelia County, Virginia located on SR 600 (Ammon Road) near Dinwiddie and Nottoway Counties. The nearest volunteer fire department is in Mannboro, 8 km northwest. The name 'Amon' probably comes from the Bible; In the Old Testament, the people of Amun were eternal opponents of the ancient Israelites. At the beginning of the 20th century, Ammon was included in the list of cities with its own post office. Ammon is now served by the post office in Ford, Virginia, ZIP code 23850, 6 miles south of Dinwiddie County. The vicinity of Ammon appears to have been spared a major engagement during the Civil War, although the Battle of Namozine Church was fought just 3 miles NE and troops on both sides are said to have moved in the vicinity ever since onwards as Confederate forces retreated and Union troops pursued. Built between 1917 and 1920, Ammon School was one of the first of several Rosenwald schools in Amelia County. It was designed for a teacher and was located on what is now SR 610 (Wills Road), probably a small structure once about 1 mile NW of Ammon. In the early 20th century, the Rosenwald School Project was a community initiative that established thousands of institutions throughout the South, primarily to educate African-American children. The Ammon School property went up for sale in the 1960s after desegregation.
